We appeared at the Compulsory Purchase Order Inquiry for the redevelopment of Failsworth District Centre on behalf of Oldham Council. Subsequently, we were instructed by the joint venture company established by the Council to deliver the development. The scheme is anchored by a large Tesco and includes a store for Aldi, unit shops, a McDonald’s drive‑through restaurant, and a health centre with unit shops and housing.
Following the initial planning approval, various permissions have been granted to extend the Tesco store, enable the development of Aldi, a petrol filling station and unit shops. Outline planning permission (51 units) has also been granted for residential development on the site of Failsworth Mill (designated an employment site) which is adjacent to Tesco.
In addition to Failsworth, we have advised Oldham Council and appeared as a witness at CPO inquiries in respect of retail schemes at Central Arcade, Oldham and South Union Street. We have also appeared as a witness successfully opposing a CPO promoted by Calderdale Council to facilitate a retail development at Brighouse.
